Elements of Poetry
  • Speaker/Persona - the person who is addressing the reader
  • Audience - can be another character, or who is not present, or is dead, or the reader
  • Content - the subject of the poem
  • Theme - the meaning of the poem
  • Shape and Form - structured and free verse
  • Mood and Tone - feeling that the poet creates
  • Imagery - pictures we perceive by senses through poetic language
  • Diction - choice of words
  • Syntax - organization of words, phrases and clauses
  • Figurative Language - language which does not mean exactly what it says
